Dawson Contributes to African Literacy

In 2003 an interesting request came to us from a United Nations agency that had funds available to provide dictionaries to school children in Angola. The question was could we supply 40,000 copies?

Although Dawson Books prides itself on supplying any book in any quantity to anywhere, 40,000 copies to Angola was a little unusual even for us. Indeed, no publisher of such a dictionary had stock at anything like these levels.

Therefore, the task was to find a publisher prepared to reprint such a quantity at a reasonable price and for Dawson to arrange delivery direct to Luanda.

We negotiated with Portuguese publisher Porto Editora to produce the number of copies required. These weighed in at 14 tons and filled the container we sent to Angola in October.

Dawson was delighted, not only to rise to the challenge, but also to play a small part in aiding literacy in a country with bright prospects for the future.
