Dawson Days 2009

The London Dawson Day

Fishmongers' Hall – 3 June 2009

Once again eagle eyed, roving reporter Steven Welch reports from the London Dawson Day!

As in previous years the 2009 season commenced in Paris with the Dawson Day this year being held at the charming ‘Salons Latécoère'. To read more about this event, please scroll further down.

The London Dawson Day – lovely venue, gorgeous food, engaging talks and demonstrations and happy guests – what more could you wish for!

Held in the opulent Fishmongers' Hall, this year's London Dawson Day has been called by some “the best ever”! Certainly Fish Hall is a lovely example of one of the foremost Livery Halls of the City of London , with its priceless collection of artworks and artefacts from bygone times; it was for many of our 200 guests the perfect setting.

Left - Busy in the Banqueting Hall

Right - Much serious discussion at the World Scientific stand!

This year, guests were able to visit The Court Room to hear a talk from Heather Sherman, our Service Development Manager, on dawsonenter, our soon to be introduced enhancement of the famous enterBooks book acquisition database. This talk generated much excitement as enterBooks is a valuable tool for the modern librarian and dawsonenter, with its many enhancements, is keenly anticipated. Just as popular was the joint talk by Jude Norris, eBook Sales and Marketing Manager and Mark Howard, Electronic Content Manager on the steadily evolving dawsonera ebook platform. Jude gave guests a resume of the recent enhancements that have improved the platform and Mark was able to talk about the many new Publisher Partners that are contributing to the platform.

Meanwhile, the sumptuous Court Drawing Room with its magnificent portrait of the young Elizabeth II by Pietro Annigoni, played host to demonstrations of the Dawson servicing techniques by Pat Eades and live dawsonera demonstrations by Jude Norris and Claire Chandler of the dawsonera team.

L - Claire Chandler talks to a guest about dawsonera

R - Pat Eades shows how servicing is done at Dawson!

In the Banqueting Hall, guests met with the twenty exhibitors who were able to discuss their many new publications and products. It was here in the afternoon that the popular Prize Draw took place and many of our exhibitors gave lovely prizes for our guests to win. A list of our exhibitors can be found at the foot of the page.

L - Expectant guests wait to see if their number is called and they win a prize!

R - Yes, you've won a prize!

The Dawson Days are renowned for their fine fare and this year was no exception! The Fishmongers' Hall has a resident chef and his marvellous fish pie will long be remembered.

The Doggett's Men are closely associated with Fishmongers' Hall as they belong to a long line of men who have worked on the River Thames!

In closing this report, it's good to illustrate with some of the many emails and letters that we have received at Dawson in the wake of what has been one of the most successful Dawson Days so far!

Here is just a sample of the many that we've received:

“ DawsonEnter... or fish pie....? Dawson ..enter.... or...... fish... pie...?

Hmmmm, it was hard to know which beautifully prepared dish caused the more excited chatter from the seasoned palates of the Dawson Day guests yesterday! "That's the sort... bring me some" applied equally, I think.

It is always hard to believe that you will be able to beat the previous year's prize-winning concoction, but 2009 not only provided the sumptuous building and refreshments but the exotic and historical Doggett's Men as the piece de resistence. Even these, however, pale in comparison with Dawson 's staff who are always so genuinely friendly, knowledgeable, willing to listen, to accept suggestions, to explain and, best of all, to provide good humoured entertainment. This extends right to the top and it is always astonishing how our names, locations and histories seem to be memorised and available at instant recall!

The day was both a social pleasure and a working education, which is a winning combination. I still don't know how you achieve it, but the best chefs have their secret ingredients! What I do know is that even after all these years I remain deeply impressed by the enthusiasm, dedication and sheer expertise I have witnessed and I would like to thank all concerned for yesterday's unbeatable menu!”

Peter Brading, Bristol University Library

“ Thank you so much for the Dawson Day.  It was useful, informative, and, as ever a very enjoyable day.”

Iris Carter, South Thames College

“T hank you so much for the lovely Dawson Day at Fishmongers' Hall. It was most informative and enjoyable and the lunch was super.”

Cathy Lohan, Barnet College

“Yesterday was a great day and all the staff from SOAS really enjoyed it.  One, who had never attended a Dawson 's Day before, won a spot prize - so very pleased with that!

Thanks for organizing it.”

Peter McCormack, SOAS

“On behalf of those who came from Anglia Ruskin University can I say a big thank you for your kind hospitality. The day had a great atmosphere, was well organised, informative, excellent food and drink, and what a great setting in the historical Fishmongers Building by the Thames . Well done to all at Dawson 's, thanks and good wishes.”

Paul McNamara, ARU

“Thank you for organising a brilliant Dawson Day.  It was only my second time, but I think the venue and catering this year were better than last year.  The venue staff were very welcoming and friendly, as were the Dawson staff of course!

I brought along two of the Library Assistants in my team this year as they often miss out on these events.  We all found the dawsonenter demo useful and we were most impressed with Pat's servicing master class and hope to put her techniques to good use on our repairs backlog.”

Gayle Setterfield, London College of Fashion Library

“Fishmongers' was a magnificent venue and the food and wine the best for several years. Apart from that there was the pleasure of seeing friends from Dawson Books and other institutions. A really worth-while day.”

Anselm Nye, Queen Mary College

“Many thanks again for a superb Dawson 's Day.  I thought the venue yesterday was outstanding and particularly enjoyed the plated lunch (really relaxed compared with previous events).  The venue also had plenty of space and people could move about with ease.  The staff on hand were really attentive and genuinely helpful.  Pity we can't have it there again next year.  Very best of luck finding a venue to beat it!”

Vonny Bee, LSE

“I really enjoyed the Dawson Day. It was nice to meet the Dawson staff again; you're always so kind and helpful. Dawsonenter looks very promising. Unlike some other agents/suppliers, Dawson do really seem to listen to their customers and respond which is very refreshing.

Also the food was gorgeous so thank you very much for a lovely day!”

Marion van Elzelingen, University of Westminster

“ I thought it was a super day as always and I really enjoyed it as always and meeting publishers and colleagues in other universities.   The Dawsonenter session was very interesting as there are some super developments coming through which will be a real benefit.   Also good to hear about the increased content on Dawsonera.

Loved the venue, the tour was very interesting - so much history attached to the livery.   Oh and the food was delicious - a superb fish pie - but then what better source of fresh fish could there have been!

Thanks for a great day - a lovely break from the daily routine.”

Liz Weeks, University of the West of England

“… the great pleasure we gained in coming along, and we'd like to thank everyone involved at Dawson for making us feel as welcome as if it were our first visit. We greatly enjoyed the Dawson Day, and appreciate how much time and effort it must take to organise. It was a big success, and the lunch was excellent.”

Mark Statham, Gonville and Caius College

The Dawson Day gave the team the opportunity to present dawsonera – our ebook platform, to talk with our clients about EDI and also to announce the development of dawsonenter, our replacement for enterBooks.com.

The Dawson France team wish to thank all attendees, both customers and publishers, who made the Dawson Day such a success.
